Importing Smart Pet Products to the USA: Buyer Checklist
By Nuvipaw · Updated 2026-10-07
Build a model-specific document request for connected feeders, litter boxes, trackers, fountains and dryers before placing a U.S. order.
Record the model, adapter, radio module, battery and firmware revisions. Ask a qualified broker or compliance adviser to determine the applicable requirements. This sourcing guide is not a product approval or a complete legal assessment.
1. Who is responsible for the import?
Identify the importer of record and responsibilities for classification, customs value, origin information and entry documents. Ask your broker to confirm the classification and charges for the actual model and entry date. Use CBP's new-importer guidance as a starting point.
2. What radio-equipment evidence matches the model?
For Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or cellular models, request the applicable FCC authorization information and identification for the finished configuration. Have your adviser assess the radio module and host integration rather than assuming that a module document covers every finished product. Consult the FCC equipment authorization knowledge database.
3. Do CPSC certification and eFiling requirements apply?
General-use products subject to applicable consumer product safety rules may require a General Certificate of Conformity. Determine which rules actually apply to the specific item, and review the current import certificate-filing requirements with your broker. See CPSC certification guidance and the CPSC eFiling applicability resources. Do not assume every pet product has identical obligations.
4. Does the shipment contain lithium batteries?
Identify the battery model, chemistry, capacity and shipping configuration. Request the applicable UN 38.3 test summary and have the carrier assess the shipment's packaging and transport requirements. Use PHMSA's lithium battery test-summary guidance; transport documentation is separate from product market-access evidence.
5. Is the physical product suitable for the intended use?
- Confirm the complete device or adapter's input rating for U.S. 120 V / 60 Hz use, plug type and the relevant safety evaluation.
- Obtain English instructions, approved pet-size limits, cleaning guidance and configuration-specific warnings.
- For trackers, confirm the actual U.S. carrier, radio bands, SIM arrangement and recurring cost.
- For heated or moving equipment, request evidence for temperature controls, detection/interlocks and interruption behavior as applicable.
- Ask your adviser about additional material, state, retailer or marketplace requirements for the intended sales channel.
What should the supplier document pack contain?

None of these documents is verified for the public Nuvipaw catalog. Request the current pack for your selected model and have it reviewed before committing.
